SOURCES OF INFORMATION—GOVERNMENTThere are various government publicationsthat you may find useful as sources of reference.A number of publications issued by the NavalFacilities Engineering Command (NAVFACENG-COM) that will be of interest to you are listed inthe Documentation Index, NAVFAC P-349(updated semiannually). The publications aregenerally classified as follows: Design Manuals(DMs); Technical Publications (TPs); Mainte-nance and Operations (MOs); and AdministrativeInformation (P).NAVFAC publications should be available inyour battalion technical library or in theengineering division of the public works activity.Their titles are self-explanatory and you canconsult the publications that contain the subjectmatter in which you are interested. Suggestedpublications that should be in the engineeringsection of the battalion technical library are listedin appendix II.Some Air Force Manuals (AFMs) and ArmyTechnical Manuals (TMs) have subjects that arerelated to the Engineering Aid rating. They maybe available in the technical library of thebattalion; if not, they are easily ordered throughthe normal naval supply procurement system.TMs and AFMs of particular importance to youare included in the engineering section of thebattalion technical library listing in appendix IIof this manual.To improve your ability in preparing any typeof construction drawing, you should also refer totraining manuals of other Occupational Field 13ratings, especially those for the E-4 level.Detailed standards for armed forces drawingsare set forth in Military Standards, published bythe Assistant Secretary of Defense (Supply andLogistics), Office of Standardization. Any Navyactivity can obtain copies of these standards bywriting to the Commanding Officer, NavalPublications and Forms Center, 5801 TaborAvenue, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania 19120. Acomplete and up-to-date copy of each of thesestandards is a must to have in any drafting roomlibrary of the SEABEES.SOURCES OF INFORMATION—COMMERCIALTo keep up to date on the current progress ofnew equipment and on the new materials relatedto your rating, you will find that the bestsource of information is commercial publi-cations. These publications may be in theform of a textbook or an operation manual fora particular instrument. The instrument opera-tion manual can be obtained from instrumentmanufacturers or dealers. On the other hand,textbooks are to be purchased. Your technicallibrary may, however, have some of them onhand.Every EA should strive to acquire at least afew textbooks for his personal use by purchasingthem himself, if feasible. The knowledge andskill you learned through formal studies andon-the-job training in the SEABEEs must besupplemented continuously with off-hours studieson your own initiative. This will not only broadenyour knowledge but will also enhance yourchances of getting a high score in Navy-wideprofessional examinations.16-14
